A night out at a concert by cult-rock band Local H is presented as an energetic, discursive, and borderline psychedelic movie experience. Written, directed and edited by the band’s singer/guitarist Scott Lucas (and shot in real time during a blistering performance at venerable Chicago music venue the Metro), LIFERS is not quite a documentary — and not quite a concert film– but those elements are blended with a fractured narrative to create something that’s like a cross between Led Zeppelin’s “The Song Remains The Same” and Richard Linklater’s “Slacker”.

Nat’s Note: As many of you know, I grew up in Lake County, Illinois. You probably also know that I’ve long been dissatisfied with the cultural scene in a county of more than 750,000 people. I’ve taken to calling it a cultural wasteland. There were no music clubs, independent theaters, or much of anything that felt truly exciting—just a landscape of strip malls and fast food. That’s how I got into showing independent films to people.

In my opinion, I’ve encountered two great works of art about growing up and living in Lake County. One is Local H’s second album, As Good As Dead. The other is a film that I hope to bring to town this September.

Having known Scott Lucas for more than 30 years, this film isn’t just great—it’s also deeply special and personal to me. I can’t wait to see it again, especially on what is probably the best sound system I’ve seen it on. I couldn’t imagine a better way to kick this festival off.
